- misconcepties over expat (island) life -
Het zijn precies dit soort advertenties waarvan de haren in mijn nek tegenwoordig overeind gaan staan en ergens moet ik er ook een beetje om lachen. Waarom? Omdat ik me de impact van dit soort misconcepties, sinds ik zelf als expat op Curaçao woon, veel beter ben gaan realiseren.
Als coach heb ik me, getriggerd door mijn eigen worstelingen, meer en meer verdiept in de uitdagingen waar expats mee geconfronteerd (kunnen) worden. Ook op een tropisch eiland in de Caribische zon of misschien zelfs juist op een tropisch eiland in de Caribische zon.
Curaçao staat ook wel bekend als Dushi Kòrsou. Dushi is een Papiaments woord en kan verschillende dingen betekenen; mooi, zoet, lekker, lief etc., het betreft altijd iets positiefs. Het woord kan gebruikt worden in relatie tot verschillende dingen.
Zo is het o.a. een koosnaampje onder geliefden, vergelijkbaar met schat of schatje, kan het gebruikt worden om te verwijzen naar lekker eten, iets liefs dat iemand voor je doet zoals het geven van een cadeau of misschien ben je zelfs weleens nagefloten terwijl iemand dushi naar je riep.

Peak season for The Great Migration in Kenya, one of my former home countries where I used to live as a kid, is from July to October. This got me to thinking about another interesting phenomenon that takes place yearly in about the same period. Namely the relocation of a large group of expats either travelling to the Dutch Caribbean islands, where I live now, or travelling back to their home country the Netherlands. Read more...
